Tom Morris Golf Club, St Andrews
Tom Morris Golf Club, St Andrews
Tom Morris Scared Head Spoon.
An elegant long nose transitional scared head beech wood spoon by Tom Morris of St Andrews. This great looking club has a polished club head with lead weight to the rear and the traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole, very faint Morris stamp on the head. The hickory shaft fitted with replaced full length hide grip with underlisting, stamped below 'John Wisden and Co., 21 Cranbourn St., London'.
This is a very nice example of a scared head golf club from the 1880's.
Approximate head size:-
a = 9.5 cm
b = 3.2 cm
c = 4.8 cm
The early clubs are made with a hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
