Vintage Golf Club, Willie Park, Musselburgh, Compressed Wood Driver
Vintage Golf Club, Willie Park, Musselburgh, Compressed Wood Driver
Scared Head Golf Club, Driver, By Willie Park.
What looks to be a normal scared head transitional driver is in fact Willie Park's patent compressed wooden driver. Made by the Musselburgh club maker, the head is bent from the straight form to a curved shape. It is then cut and shaped from the compressed piece of wood. The wood was bent so the grain would run straight across the head (parallel to the face) and straight up the neck. Park received a British patent in November 7th, 1894 (No. 21,424) for his compressed wooden clubs, which he believed gave them more durability and practically unbreakable. With much confidence, Park undertook to replace any club broken within three months of purchase. The head has good graining, possibly oak, a face insert with traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole, a splice joint with whipping and three small lead weights to the rear, head stamped 'W. Park's Compressed Patent' in an oval. The club fitted with a hickory shaft and a suede leather grip.
Approximate head size:-
a = 5cm
b = 3cm
c = 5.2cm
The early clubs are made with long slender shallow-faced heads with an ash or hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
