h1 classbiography James Shoolbred (1820 - 1931)h1James Shoolbred (Jas. Shoolbred & Co.) founded his company in London in the 1820s originally a drapers selling textiles carpets and other items for interior decorating to the furniture trade. In the 1870s the company was designing manufacturing and selling original high-quality furniture. Within another decade the company expanded and moved into a larger location in London Tottenham Court Road becoming one of the first great department stores. The company was granted a Royal warrant by the mid 1880s and their furniture was among the highest quality available for the Victorian home. Despite James Shoolbred & Cos popularity and market presence the company struggled after the market crash of 1929 and closed for good in 1931.
