James Shoolbred

1820 - 1931

James Shoolbred (Jas. Shoolbred & Co.) founded his company in London in the 1820's, originally a drapers selling textiles, carpets and other items for interior decorating to the furniture trade. In the 1870's the company was designing, manufacturing and selling original, high-quality furniture. Within another decade the company expanded and moved into a larger location in London, Tottenham Court Road, becoming one of the first great department stores. The company was granted a Royal warrant by the mid 1880's and their furniture was among the highest quality available for the Victorian home. Despite James Shoolbred & Co's popularity and market presence, the company struggled after the market crash of 1929 and closed for good in 1931.
