Vintage Tennis Racket By Slazenger, The Imp.
Vintage Tennis Racket By Slazenger, The Imp.
The 'Imp' Wooden Framed Lawn Tennis Racket.
A good wooden laminated framed tennis racket called The 'Imp'. The throat with colourful gilt decal on one side, showing a red mischievous devil or sprite and the word 'IMP'. Although not stamped with the Slazenger, Slazenger did make a racket call the 'Imp' and 'Demon'. The other manufacturer could be 'Gray's' of Cambridge as the wrappings on the racquet are in the Cambridge colours. The frame is clean and in good condition with original shoulder wrappings and a nice shaped fishtail grip. Some of the strings with damage but a nice looking racket.
The fishtail (fish tail) was an innovation in the Victorian period and was an attractive gimmick to help tennis players to grip their rackets. They were manufactured approximately from the 1890's to the 1920's and their shapely handle is always an attraction to the collector.
