In 1847, Adolph Frankau arrived in London, he saw opportunities in the tobacco market and created the company Adolph Frankau and Co. Ltd. and became an importer of meerschaum pipes and other supplies in connection with the tobacco. He set up shop and hired a young 14 year old boy, Louis Blumfeld. The business thrived until the death of Adolph Frankau in 1856. His widow was initially going to sell up but was persuaded to entrust the future of the company to Louis Blumfeld, then 18 years old. Louis Blumfeld greatly expanded the company's operations developing an important international trade, with particular success in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and Europe.

"BBB" were the first pipes ever to have a registered trademark, the initials standing for 'Blumfeld's Best Briars'. After his death, the BBB gradually became known as Britain's Best Briars.
