Motoring Prints, Hunting Prints, A Check and Gone Away.
A pair of motoring chromolithographic prints by Cecil Aldin, published by Lawrence & Bullen Ltd. in 1903. The two prints with titled plaques on the original oak frames, 'A Check' and 'Gone Away'. The frames have two images in each, one large main image with follow on smaller frieze along the bottom. These prints are part of Aldin's broader exploration of transportation themes and are celebrated examples of his early 20th-century works that capture the elegance and excitement of the motoring era. Aldin's nostalgic view of Edwardian rural life is a hallmark of his work, as is the rich colour palettes, dynamic linework, and attention to anatomical detail in both the animals and vehicles, making his prints highly collectible.
GONE AWAY depicts a young lady wearing a motoring bonnet at the wheel of the automobile, whilst the chauffer is sat on the back seat. They are roaring through town, startling a couple of huntsmen coming out of the Talbot Inn, one just mounting his steed the other already mounted and is furiously waving his riding crop. The accompanying frieze shows the same lady in the car roaring along a country lane with the two huntsmen chasing behind.
A CHECK now captures the scene of the vehicle at a standstill due to a mechanical issue. The chauffer can be seen kneeling looking under the car. The first huntsman has now caught up with them and is raising his top hat to the young lady. The accompanying frieze shows the car being towed back to town by a horse led by one huntsman, the chauffer now at the wheel. The second 'amorous' huntsman is leading his horse whilst walking with the young lady.
