Signed Cecil Aldin Dog Print - Weight Will Tell
A classic example of Cecil Aldin's much-loved canine artwork, Weight Will Tell. This artists proof is a charming colour lithograph depicting Cracker, Aldin's beloved Bull Terrier and favourite model, attempting to secure the most comfortable position on a sofa. As was often the case in Aldin's dog studies, Cracker appears to have gained the upper hand over his companion, this time a Scottish Terrier who, despite his determination, is unable to outdo the larger and more confident Cracker.
The image is a playful reference to Aldin's celebrated book Sleeping Partners, which featured sketches of Cracker alongside Micky, the artist's Irish Wolfhound, as they competed for space on the small sofa in Aldin's studio. Cracker became one of the most recognisable dogs in the world through Aldin's hugely popular books, magazine illustrations and prints. Almost entirely white, with a distinctive black patch above one eye, he was such a well-known character that upon his death he was honoured with an obituary in The Times.

This colour lithograph is mounted and in a new frame, the original label from the the old frame is on the reverse, and is signed in pencil by the artist.
