Oil Painting Of A Member Of The Royal Company of Archers

Sold

Oil On Canvas Of An Archer.
An impressive, large framed portrait of a member of 'The Royal Company Of Archers' by the Scottish painter Charles Kay Robertson (1860 - 1939). The oil is signed in the bottom right-hand corner, C K ROBERTSON. The gentleman can be seen standing holding his bow and wearing the distinctive uniform of the Royal Company of Archers. The uniform features a dark green tunic with black facings, dark green trousers with black and crimson stripe, and a Balmoral bonnet with the Royal Company's badge and an eagle feather.

The Royal Company of Archers is the Sovereign's personal Bodyguard in Scotland, a role it has performed since 1822 and the reign of King George IV. Its base is in Edinburgh at the Archers Hall and they were the first military body of troops in the service of the British Crown who adopted tartan as a part of their uniform. It was originally formed as an Archery Club and the longbow is still the Royal Company's principal weapon.
