Cambridge University Lithograph After Cuthbert Bradley.
A framed, hand coloured Cambridge Lithograph 'The Sporting Cantab' by Cuthbert Bradley. Published August 10th 1885, by Messrs. Fores, 41 Piccadilly, London. The main image shows a full-length portrait of a Cambridge graduate wearing his gown, mortarboard, monocle and smoking a cigarette. He is standing in front of a roaring fire with his three dogs at his feet. Above the mantelpiece is a mirror and a mounted fox head. The central illustration is surrounded by nine colourful vignettes connected with his 'Varsity' life, the crest of Cambridge University with a hunting horn and riding crop under the title 'The Sporting Cantab'. The vignettes with subtitles:- Coaching For His 'Little Go', Down At Ditton May Week To See The Boats And The Girls, Hunted - Proctors On The Prowl, Plays Polo For The Varsity, A Peep At Newmarket, Hunts With The Fitzwilliam, Drives Tandem Down To Newmarket, A Run With The Trinity Beagles, Dons Silks At Cottenham.
The term 'Cantab' is used after degree titles of Cambridge University.
Cuthbert Bradley was a sporting artist, journalist, author and illustrator and an extremely talented portrayer of hounds. He became a close friend of Frank Gillard and hunted for many seasons with the Belvoir Hunt. Through this friendship Bradley was able to use many hounds from this famous pack as models.
