1930's England Swimming Suit.
1930's England Swimming Suit.
A wonderfully rare male one-piece swim suit in navy blue with gold trim, called 'The Hatfield'. Embroidered across the chest is the English rampant Lion and below the word 'ENGLAND'. This was the property of William Martin (1906 – 1980) who was part of the Great Britain team that competed in the infamous Hitler games in Berlin in 1936. He was a brilliant swimmer who helped train his friend and colleague Edward Temme to become the first man to swim the Channel both ways.
This was named after the famous swimmer Jack Hatfield (John Gatenby) who was a competitive swimmer who won three medals for Great Britain in the 1912 Summer Olympics, and competed in three other Olympic Games.
