Antique Burroughes & Watts Billiard Counters.
A rare pair of antique mechanical billiard scoring counters by Burroughes & Watts, comprising the matching "SPOT" and "PLAIN" markers.
These working billiards markers feature an ingenious mechanical scoring mechanism. The current score is displayed through the viewing windows in the central panels and is advanced by pressing the levers on either side. Each press rotates the internal numbered discs, displaying figures from 0 to 9. Once the score passes 9, pressing the right-hand lever again automatically returns the right wheel to 0 while simultaneously advancing the left-hand wheel by one increment. Both scoreboards are stamped: "Burroughes & Watts, Rivoire, Breveté". The "SPOT" counter is numbered 6868, while the "PLAIN" counter bears the number 6805.
Originally, counters of this type would have been mounted onto hand-held wooden paddles and were commonly used by spectators or officials to keep score during billiards matches. Today, they have found a new lease of life and are widely appreciated as lap counters for vintage and classic automobile racing events.
