Currier & Ives 'Darktown Series' Lithographs.
A pair of original coloured billiard lithographs by Currier & Ives of America. Published in 1882 these cartoon characters came from the 'Darktown Series' of lithographs and reflected social attitudes of the time, it was in fact one of Currier & Ives' most prolific and profitable series. Entitled "Two To Go!" and "Got 'Em Both!" by Thomas Worth (1834-1917), a New York artist. Both scenes are of a billiard hall or bar with a group of African American men playing pool or billiards. The first shows a chandelier overhead dripping hot wax on the man leaning over the table to take his shot. The second shows the ensuing mayhem with balls and cues flying into the crowd.
