Snaffles WWI Military Print, That Far, Far-away Echo 1915 - 16.
A good Snaffles WWI military lithograph ' That Far, Far-away Echo 1915 - 16'. The picture shows a soldier in the trenches dreaming of his hunting days, this is a rare picture as it has the addition of the fox as well as the huntsman and the hounds. In the top left-hand margin is a remarque depicting a horses head looking over a stable door. The print is with a faded Snaffles signature and the Snaffles blindstamp.
Charles 'Snaffles' Johnson Payne (1884 – 1967) was an English painter who specialised in water colours, who's subject matter was invariably equestrian (racing, hunting, polo and pig sticking), military or a combination of these. Snaffles had a very distinctive style by showing just one person in detail, in addition he added remarques and amusing captions to supplement the pictures and main title.
