Colonial Tent Pegging Photograph, Poona 1903.
Rare sepia toned late Victorian Colonial photograph showing a group of horsemen 'Tent Pegging' with the caption 'Poona 1903'. The photo has been embossed 'Photographed by F.B. Stewart'. Stewart came from Newcastle, but was based in the British garrison town of Poona in western India from the 1890's. He took photographs depicting British colonial and military life, and died in Poona in 1919.
Tent pegging can take a variety of forms, but usually involves a galloping horse and a rider using sword or lance to strike and pick up a target from the ground. This method of cavalry training has developed over the centuries into an established military sport.
Mount size 32 ½ cm high by 22 cm wide.
