Roland Knight Angling Oil Painting, Still Waters Run Deep
A fine original signed Victorian oil on canvas, Still Waters Run Deep, by the renowned angling artist Arthur Roland Knight (flourished 1879-1921). The painting depicts a dramatic underwater scene, showing a large pike breaking the water's surface as it pursues a shoal of roach in a calm, reeded river setting. Vibrantly rendered, the pike is instantly recognisable by its elongated body, pointed snout and distinctive greenish-brown mottled scales, and is shown with a roach already caught in its mouth. Three further roach, with silvery flanks and reddish fins, can be seen desperately attempting to escape. The realism and depth of the composition are outstanding, with the natural sheen of the fish and the tactile quality of their scales captured with remarkable skill. The painting is superbly presented in a deep period oak frame with a rich patina and gilt slip, complementing the work beautifully.
Signed 'A. Roland Knight' in the lower right-hand corner, the painting also bears the title Still Waters Run Deep inscribed on the reverse. The period frame has been professionally restored.
A striking and highly decorative example of Roland Knight's celebrated sporting and angling subjects.
