Antique Indian Coffee Table From Shekhawati
Antique Indian Coffee Table From Shekhawati
Large Rohida Takhat Coffee Table.
A large coffee table with great patina and metal work. The table with blacksmith made metal strapping and large head nails. A lovely table with plenty of character and known locally in India as a Takhat. They were originally used as daybeds by the wealthy merchant class in the 19th Century. With the raised height they would catch the occasional breeze during the hottest hours of the day.
Tecomella undulata (locally known as rohida) is a slow growing medium size deciduous tree that belongs to the family bignoniaceae. It produces quality timber and is the main source of timber amongst the indigenous tree species of desert regions of Shekhawati and Marwar in Rajasthan. Also known as "Desert Teak" or "Marwar Teak" or "Honey tree".
