Large Royal Doulton Series Ware Golf Jug, Charles Crombie
Large Royal Doulton Series Ware Golf Jug, Charles Crombie
Royal Doulton Golf Series Ware Jug.
A very rare large Royal Doulton jug with polychrome golf scenes by Charles Crombie. The jug has two different golf scenes on the side, one is of a putting scene with a caddie on all fours blowing the golf ball into the hole. The second scene shows a golfer choosing a club from his bag which is held by his caddy. There is a golf course boarder running around the top rim with the proverb "All Fools Are Not Knaves, But All Knaves Are Fools". The standard Royal Doulton mark of a Crown surmounted by a Lion and the pattern number "D3395" can clearly be seen on the bottom of the jug. This is an exceptional piece of golfing Royal Doulton Series Ware by Charles Crombie which was first introduced in 1911 and withdrawn by 1932.
Charles 'Chas' Crombie (1885 - 1967) was an illustrator whose work is well known to the collector. His pictures can be found in many forms, on postcards, calendars, in books and on Royal Doulton ceramics.
