Antique Golf Club, Ben Sayer Gruvsol Putter
Antique Golf Club, Ben Sayer Gruvsol Putter
Hickory Shafted Golf Club, Benny Putter, 'Gruvsol', Ben Sayers.
A good original example of a 'Gruvsol' Benny putter made by Ben Sayers, North Berwick. The club with original square hickory shaft stamped 'B. SAYERS' with polished leather grip. It is an unusual shaft with the bottom half being round and then terminating into a square shape up to and including the handle (matching the square edges of the grip to the blade to make for greater accuracy). The head is offset and smooth faced with a grooved or ribbed sole. The rear of the club head is stamped with Ben Sayers 'Robin' cleek mark, RUSTLESS, GRUVSOL, PAT.244929, Made in Scotland, Hand Forged, Ben Sayers, NORTH BERWICK and BENNY PUTTER REGISTERED.
The grooved sole is a feature designed to help reduce the club's friction with the turf. Sayers received a British patent (No. 244,925) dated January 7th 1925 that covered a 'Gruvsol' wooden golf club, although prior to receiving this patent Sayers had already produced the 'Gruvsol' putter.
