Antique Hickory Golf Club, Tom Stewart Iron With Personal Inspection Mark
Antique Hickory Golf Club, Tom Stewart Iron With Personal Inspection Mark
Vintage Hickory Golf Club, Iron, by Tom Stewart, St Andrews.
A fine and nicely weighted dot punched faced lofting iron by Tom Stewart of St. Andrews. The hickory shaft with polished leather grip, the rear of the club head marked with Stewart's 'PIPE' cleek mark and the phrase 'T.S. St.A. REG.TRADEMARK'. The 'pipe' mark on its own was in use from 1893 to 1905, it was from 1905 and onwards that the phrase was added. The club has Tom's personal inspection mark on it (the "dot" at the end of the toe), also on the rear of the club head, 'Special' and in an oval 'Jas. Arundel, Delamere'. This is the professional James Arundel who was professional at Delamere Forest Golf Club from it's foundation in 1910 to 1945. Arundel joined the club from Prestwick, hailing from a prominent Scottish golfing family, and since James there has only been three further professionals, 1945 - 1990 Dennis Comboy, 1990 - 2007 Ellis Jones and the present pro Martin Brown. The hickory shaft is stamped L.W. Dart just below the grip.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
