Antique Hickory Blade Putter, Golf Club.
A nice vintage blade putter by James & William Winton of London & Montrose. The rear of the club head marked 'J.H. Dumble, Luffenham Heath Golf Club, Special, 53' with the diamond cleek mark of Winton. The head has a bottom weight, thicker at the bottom than the top line, line face markings and fitted to a hickory shaft with a polished leather grip. Dumble was the golf professional at Luffenham for only one year from 1916.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
Sir Walter Scott called Stamford "the finest sight on the road between Edinburgh and London," and just five miles west lies another gem-Luffenham Heath Golf Club, nestled in the rolling Rutland countryside. Surrounded by woodland and stone villages, the course captures the spirit of England's smallest county and its motto, "Multum in Parvo"-much in little.
Founded in 1909 by Lord Willoughby de Eresby as an alternative to Sunday shooting for guests at Normanton Lodge, the course was laid out by legendary architect Harry Colt and officially opened in 1911 with a match between James Braid and Harry Vardon, drawing over 1,000 spectators.
The course quickly earned a reputation for quality and challenge, attracting aristocratic members and even the Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII, as Club Captain in 1928. The Prince of Wales Cup remains an annual tradition.
Wartime agriculture forced temporary changes in 1943, but the course rebounded by 1946. Its layout has evolved subtly since, with sensitive updates by C.K. Cotton, Donald Steel, and Dr. Martin Hawtree, who modernised bunkering and extended key holes to meet today's demands-without compromising its timeless appeal.
Declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1973, the course is rich in flora, fauna, and charm. From rare butterflies to sweeping fairways, it offers natural beauty alongside strategic play. Its blend of wooded and open heathland holes-especially the signature 17th par 3-makes every round memorable.
More than a century on, Luffenham Heath remains a classic: challenging, beautiful, and steeped in heritage. A course to return to, time and again.
