Golf Club, Patent Simpson Ball-Face Mashie
Robert Simpson Patent Golf Club.
Hickory shafted golf club mashie by Robert Simpson, Carnoustie. The club with patent 'Ball-face' club head with mussel back. Simpson's British patent (No. 19725) for the ball-face club is dated September 14, 1903. The circle acts as an indicator and helps to guide the golfer in striking the ball correctly. The face is with a ball sized circle with dot punched face markings. It starts at the bottom of the club face, with the apex protruding the top of the face by ½ cm. Behind the circle the club head has a mussel back (weight has been placed at the back, center and towards the bottom edge). The rear of the club head is stamped 'Patent, Reg.No. 19725, Warranted Hand Forged' with 'R. Simpson, Carnoustie' within an oval with the James Gourlay 'Crescent Moon & Star' cleek mark. Gourlay forged many heads for Simpson and other club makers. The hickory shaft with an indecipherable stamp just below the grip, the grip is an old, rubberised grip applied over the original grip.
A great collectable hickory golf club.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
