Vintage Golf Club, Gibson Of Kinghorn, Fife. Date 1905 - 1910
Antique Gibson Scared Head Golf Club.
A nice original persimmon wood head driver with hickory shaft and polished leather grip. The scared head club with traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole and lead weight to rear (slight damage to the wood under the lead). The head stamped 'Gibsons kinghorn' with the Gibson 'Star' cleek mark.
The whipping probably replaced at some stage. A great club in wonderful condition.
The measurements of the club are;
Length 109 cm
Width of face 7.5 cm
Depth of face 3.2 cm
The early clubs are made with a hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
Gibson's 'OUTLINE STAR' cleek mark was registered in 1906, although it had been used since Gibson began his business in the 1890's and was replaced with the 'DEEP STRUCK STAR' in the 1930's.
