Ben Sayers

1857 - 1924

Ben Sayers was a famous player, instructor and clubmaker born in Leith and was known as Wee Yin as he was only 5ft 3in. He started in the golf business around 1873 as a gutty ball maker in Musselburgh, when he went to North Berwick he became a clubmaker as well. He played in every Open from 1880 -1923 but never managed to win. In 1913 he was joined by his son, also Ben, who was instrumental in increasing the productivity of the firm, they exported clubs all over the world, America, South Africa and Japan. Ben Jr was also a very good golfer. The Sayers' are well known for their 'Benny' putter, the first to have a square shaft.
Ben Sayers are still in the golf business today.
