Vintage Taxidermy, Razorbills In Winter Plumage.
A well prepared piece of Victorian taxidermy of a pair of mounted Razorbils in a naturalistic setting. The birds are artistically modeled amongst fine groundwork all against a painted backdrop. The display case with a glazed front, sides and top, it can be removed from the base and is not original. There is a small label to the rear of the case "Razorbills in winter plumage by J. Foster and dated 1881".
A wonderful piece of taxidermy.
The Razorbill is a medium-sized seabird, primarily black with a white underside. It has a thick black beak which is deep and blunt, unlike the thinner bill of the similar guillemot. The male and female are identical in plumage; however males are generally larger than the females. The razorbill is an agile bird which is capable of both flight and diving, has a predominantly aquatic lifestyle and only comes to land in order to breed. It breeds around the coast of the UK, with the largest colonies in northern Scotland and winters in the northern Atlantic. Females lay one egg per year. Razorbills nest along coastal cliffs in enclosed or slightly exposed crevices. The parents spend equal amounts of time incubating, and once the chick has hatched, they take turns foraging for their young.
