George Nicoll Hickory Shafted Mussle Back Golf Club.
A good Mashie golf club, The 'Braid' by Nicoll of Leven, Scotland. This is a good strong Mashie with mussle or flange back to give the club more weight and bounce. The rear of the club marked with Nicoll's 'Hand' cleek mark, BRAID, Mashie and Furness Golf Club. George began forging iron heads in 1881 and the cleek mark on this club was in use from 1910 - 1920. The club is endorsed by five times Open Champion James Braid. The hickory shaft with later suede grip and whipping near the hosel.

The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.

James Braid was born in Earlsferry Fife Scotland in 1870 and was Open Champion five times 1901 1905 1906 1908 and 1910. He was the Professional at Romford GC 1896 - 1904 and Walton Heath GC 1904 - 1949. He was also a renowned golf course architect and among his designs are the Kings Course and the Queens Course at Gleneagles and he was responsible for the 1926 remodeling of The Open Championship venue Carnoustie Golf Links.
