'Farthest North' - The Voyage & Exploration of the 'Fram' 1893-96 & The Fifteen Months Sleigh Journey by Fridtjof Nansen.

Two volumes of one of the greatest journeys of exploration ever undertaken by Fridtjof Nansen in 1893. The books tell the remarkable three-year project of building a special ship, designed to be deliberately frozen into the arctic ice and to sail round the north of Russia into the Kara and Laptev Seas. Otto Sverdrup, the captain of the Fram, used his intuition of the arctic currents allowing the ship to drift towards the North Pole. From the drifting ship. Nansen and one of his men then, using dog teams, made the last assault towards the North Pole. Both books are first editions with hard covers and in original green cloth with gilt title to the front and spine, and gilt pictorial vignettes to the covers. The appendix is by Sverdrup and there are numerous text and about 120 full page illustrations. 16 coloured plates are facsimiles of Dr. Nansen's own sketches, etched portraits, photogravures and maps. Published by Westminster: Archibald Constable and Company, 2 Whitehall Gardens, 1897.
