Silver Archery Prize Medal, Cheetham Hill Archers 1853

Silver Archery Medal, Best Gold.
A Victorian silver archery medal awarded to Joseph Sherwin in 1853. Presented in a modern box the medal is finely engraved: Joseph Sherwin May 19th 1853. Presented for the best Gold by JW Scholes Esq., Hon. Member of the Cheetham Hill Archers. The inscription is enclosed within an engraved decorative belt and buckle motif, a popular mid 19th century design symbolising honour and distinction. The reverse is richly engraved with traditional archery emblems: a bow, three crossed arrows and a hunting horn, all set within a laurel wreath, reinforcing the medal's sporting and celebratory nature. The medal is fully hallmarked, displaying the lion passant for sterling silver, the three wheat sheaves and a sword erect assay mark for Chester, and the date letter "O" corresponding to 1852. Along with the maker's mark "GW" a further mark was used in the period 1784 - 1890, the Sovereign head ('duty mark'). GW could possibly be the London silversmith, George Wintle.
The Cheetham Hill Archers were a 19th-century archery club based in the Manchester area, noted for their participation in regional competitions, including the Grand National Archery Meeting in Leamington in 1851.
