Antique Billiard/Snooker table. The table is 11 feet long,
A fine quality 11ft mahogany Snooker/Billiard table raised on six turned legs and bears the label 'Improved low set cushions by J. & T. Scott. Edinburgh'. Whether Scott was the original maker or just re-fitted the table it is not known. The table was made in the second quarter of the 19th Century and has undergone various modifications. Originally this table would have had a wooden panelled bed that has been replaced by three pieces of slate for more reliable playing conditions. Many of the tables at this time where made by Gillows of Lancaster with the first specialist maker, John Thurston, a former apprentice of the firm. These earlier tables tend to be more elegant than the later ones that needed to be more robust to carry the slates. Few such tables are in existence and the quality of this one indicates that it came from a good cabinet maker.
The playing surface is covered in new playing cloth. The cushion rails have been re-rubbered and recovered in 100% English Wool napped cloth, giving true and consistent ball response. The leg bolts are hidden by mahogany slides whilst the cushion bolts have turned wooden knobs. The pockets are leather covered with net bags with the brass work being set into the top surface of the cushions.
This table will be supplied with balls for snooker and pool, two cues and one rest. It is a lovely table that plays as good as it looks.
