4½" J.B. Moscrop Patent Brake Fishing Reel
4½" J.B. Moscrop Patent Brake Fishing Reel
J.B. Moscrop Patent 4½" Brass Fishing Reel.
A good salmon brass fly fishing reel by J.B. Moscrop, Manchester. The reel with constant check, full brass foot and a patent brake and single distinctive blind, bullet-shaped Ebonite handle which is unique to the Moscrop reel. No other reel was fitted with this style of handle, probably because it was covered by the terms of Moscrop's Patent. The reel (patent 17,502 of the 14th October 1891) with brake adjusted on the front plate with a rotating button attached to a compression spring. Rotating the button effectively tightens the drum against the frame and backplate causing drag. Also it has a unique drum release mechanism with a U-shaped wire clip passing through the hollow spindle allowing drum removal without the means of tools. The foot plate with makers details and the circular disc on the rear plate 'J.B. Moscrop Patent, Manchester'. "The Manchester Reel" with original finish and in good working condition.
