Round Center Table With Carved Base
Round Center Table With Carved Base
Tilt Top Circular Center Table With Ornate Base.
A wonderful antique George IV bleached rosewood tilt-top centre/breakfast table with heavily carved walnut base. The table has carved alternating acanthus and lotus-leaf edging to the top with hexagonal baluster form pedestal with foliate collar on carved triform base terminating in large lion paw feet on recessed brass castors. The grain on the bleached rosewood top is highly decorative, resembles a zebra skin. The centre table attributed to Gillows, A picture of a similar table 'Handsome pillar and claw [table] richly carved in rosewood' appears in a book by S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol I, pl. 391, p. 337. That table had a marble insert and was executed by Gillow & Co. in 1821 in Oxford Street for a Stephen Tempest.
