Antique Travelling Chess Set.
This is a very good example of a folding travellers chess set. The exterior of the box is made of mahogany with a rosewood and birch playing surface. The chess pieces are made of bone with peg bottoms. Around the outside of the playing surface are holes for the taken pieces to be placed. The good thing with this type of chess set is that if you need to stop the game half way through you can do so without losing the position of the pieces. This is done by closing the flap lids, then folding the box closed and securing it shut with two brass hooks, all the pieces will remain secure and in place for the continuation of the game at a later time.

Open size with flaps: 16 cm wide by 32 cm deep.
