Hickory Shafted Golf Club, Rut Iron St Andrews
Hickory Shafted Golf Club, Rut Iron St Andrews
St Andrews Hickory Rut Iron.
A wonderful and scarce example of a Rut Iron, or Rut Niblick, dating from the 1880's and stamped St Andrews - the historic heart of the game. This early iron features a small, compact head with a smooth face, characteristic of clubs produced before face scoring and punch-marking became standard. Designed for playing from cart ruts and difficult lies, the rut iron was a highly specialised and essential club in 19th-century golf. The back of the head is stamped: St Andrew - Niblick, with the original hickory shaft being stamped: Hickory, Niblick, and the initials "I.C". The short hosel fits neatly and correctly onto the original hickory shaft which is fitted with a replaced thick leather grip.
A superb piece from the early era of St Andrews clubmaking - ideal for the serious collector of pre-1900 golf clubs or the enthusiast of the game's earliest equipment. Clubs of this age and type are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in such honest condition.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
