Long Nose Golf Club By Jack Morris Of St Andrews
Long Nose Golf Club By Jack Morris Of St Andrews
Antique Long Nose John "Jack" Morris Golf Club.
A superb beechwood long nosed grassed driver golf club by John "Jack" Morris, Hoylake. The polished head with makers name, 'J. Morris' and 'J.W. MacFie'. MacFie possibly being the original owner of the club and possibly a relation to A.F. MacFie, the winner of the first British Amateur held in 1885. This great looking club has lead weight to the rear and the traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole with three wooden pegs holding it in place. It has the original hickory shaft with the owners name on it and the remains of the sheepskin grip. This is a very nice example of a long nose golf club, from the 1890's in excellent condition and was the club featured on page 101 of Jeffery Ellis's book 'The Clubmaker's Art, Antique Golf Clubs And Their History'.
Head size:- 5 ¾" long, 1 ¼" high, 1 ¾" deep.
The early clubs are made with long slender shallow-faced heads with a ash or hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
