Long Nose Golf Club by Mitchell.
A superb long nosed golf club, the polished blackened beech wood head with faint name stamp, most probably 'MITCHELL'. This refers to David Mitchell, a club maker from St. Andrews and Carnoustie, and not the retailers 'Mitchell of Manchester'. In 1876 Mitchell replaced Frank Bell at the Dalhousie Golf Club whose members played over the famous Carnoustie Links. Prior to this he was a Clubmaker at St. Andrews.
The head of this club has a lead weight to the rear and the sole has the traditional horn slip along the leading edge held in place with three wooden pegs. The whipping on the splice or scared joint has been replaced at some time but the hickory shaft and sheepskin grip are original. This is a very good example of a long nose golf club from 1870's.
Head size:- 5" long, 1 ¼" high, 1 ¾" deep.
The early clubs are made with long slender shallow-faced heads with ash or hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
