Original Wilmot Breeden Jaguar Car Mascot

Original Wilmot Breeden Jaguar Car Mascot

Sold

1950's - 60's Jaguar Car Mascot.
Original chrome Jaguar bonnet-fitted car mascot in excellent condition mounted onto an ebonised base. The snarling mouth, ears tight against the head, the right front paw slightly ahead of the left, leaping through the air with rear legs outstretched, a very evocative image and one everybody knows. The original Jaguar mascot was designed expressly for SS Cars Ltd - manufacturers of the Jaguar car - by the eminent artist and sculptor, Frederick Gordon Crosby. It was available to purchase in 1938 for two guineas and was fitted to the radiator cap. This Jaguar model lasted until 1951 when the Mk V saloon went out of production.
A new Jaguar mascot came about in 1955 with the 'Mark 1' saloon, it was offered as an optional extra on the standard model and eventually as standard on all other models. The mascot changed slightly with the base changing for bonnet-fitting rather than for a radiator cap and the rear legs became outstretched with the Jaguar leaping rather than about to leap.

Between the front legs of this mascot can be found 7/10091/1 WBB, the casting number for the manufacturer Wilmot Breeden. This mascot spanned 14 years of Jaguar models (Mk 1, Mk 2, Mk VIII, Mk IX, S-type, 240, 340 and XK 150) all bonnet-fitted with two securing bolts.

As you can see from the photos we do have a second mascot available.
