1937 Triumph Tiger 80

1937 Triumph Tiger 80

Vintage Triumph Tiger 80
This Triumph Tiger 80 motorcycle is one of the most stylish sports roadsters of the period and is a highly sought-after bike. It is a 1937 'Tiger' and only around 500 were built per year between 1937 and 1939. This bike has been restored some years ago and is still in great condition, not concurs but used and well looked after. The chrome work is very good and the paintwork, apart from minor scratches, looks great. The 350cc engine runs well and is great to ride with a wonderful sound coming from the exhaust.

The Triumph 'Tigers' success helped to re-establish the company as one of Britain's most successful motorcycle firms. After the great depression of the 1930's, and the company wishes to concentrate on their cars, this was just what was needed for a company with such a strong two-wheeled heritage. Edward Turner (formerly from Ariel Motorcycles') had been drafted in to help turn around Triumph's fortunes so he designed a new range of lightweight singles which were marketed as the Tiger 70, 80 and 90 (250cc, 350cc and 500cc), the evocative names hinting at each model's top speed. The pre-war Tigers had attractive and distinctive petrol tanks in chrome-plate and silver sheen. In 1939 upon the outbreak of WWII Triumph's entire stock of completed civilian machines was requisitioned by the War Office, they did however go on to develop the 3TW, a 350cc twin-cylinder model specifically for military use. The Triumph factory, in Coventry, was completely destroyed during the Blitz in 1940 so when the new premises at Meriden were ready the war effort production of the single-cylinder side-valve (3SW) and overhead-valve (3HW) models all of which were based on their civilian equivalents could continue, the latter was based on the pre-war Tiger 80 sports roadster. Triumph's single-cylinder models were used mainly by the Royal Navy for despatch duties and general liaison, with the less-powerful 3SW reserved for the WRNS.
