City of Bath Corporation Challenge Cup, Silver-Plated Rowing Trophy.
A distinguished and ornate EPNS silver-plated rowing trophy crafted by renowned Sheffield silversmith John Round & Son (JR & S). This impressive piece takes the form of a classical two-handled cup, richly adorned with floral and scroll motifs, and elevated on an exceptional sculptural base formed by three crossed rowing oars.
The upper body of the trophy features elegant decoration, including flowing foliage, scrollwork, and a pair of decorative cartouches, one finely engraved depicting two racing single rowing sculls, evoking speed, discipline, and sporting tradition. The other bears the trophies title: City of Bath Corporation Challenge Cup.
The three crossed oars supporting the cup rise from a circular plinth engraved with the City of Bath crest and the Latin motto "Floreat Bathon" ("May Bath Flourish").
The underside bears the maker's marks: JR & S, EPNS, Warranted Hard Soldered, 28, with their trade mark of a globe surrounded by the inscription 'ALL THE ROUND', confirming manufacture by John Round & Son, a respected name in late 19th - early 20th century Sheffield silverware.
This trophy is not only a superb example of Edwardian craftsmanship but also an evocative piece of Bath's civic and sporting history. The City of Bath Corporation Challenge Cup was first competed for in 1907, with the inaugural race held between the Bath City Police and the Bath Fire Brigade. The event was reported in the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette on September 5, 1907, marking the beginning of what was then celebrated as an "interesting race" for this handsome prize.
A rare and striking object that beautifully combines athletic heritage, civic pride, and decorative artistry.
