Vintage Victorian Lawn Tennis Photograph - Season 1897.
A superb early Lawn Tennis Club photograph dating from the 1897 season. Presented in its original period oak frame with glazing, the image shows six male tennis players in traditional late-Victorian tennis attire. Three players hold wooden rackets typical of the era - one possibly a flat-top model, and the others appearing to be a matching pair. Each features plain wooden handles with leather butt caps and no added wrappings (leather or cloth) on the handles.
The gentlemen are posed before their club pavilion steps, with a long bench visible to one side - a classic composition of early club photography. The photograph remains mounted on its original photographer's board, stamped Warner Gothard's Studios (Barnsley, Dewsbury, Leeds, and Halifax). Beneath the image is the inscription: "Season 1897. Matches played 14. Won 13. Lost 1. (Unfinished.)"

A fine and well-preserved example of early British tennis history, showcasing the elegance and sportsmanship of the Victorian era.
