Ball Tail Tennis Racket, George Gibson Bussey
A fine and rare example of a ball-tail lawn tennis racket by George Gibson Bussey. The racket is beautifully crafted with an ash frame and a convex walnut wedge, faintly embossed with its name - possibly "The Brighton." Though time has softened the lettering, the detail remains just visible, a quiet echo of its original branding.
The handle bears the clear stamp "G.G.B. & Co. London" along with the weight marking "13 oz." The frame itself is straight and true, its gut stringing neatly replaced, with two rows of black trebling at the base and three at the top - a pleasing balance to the eye.
Running down the centre of the handle is a deep groove on both sides, flanked by smaller ones to aid grip and comfort in play. The craftsmanship culminates in Bussey's distinctive balltail end, a charming and unusual flourish that sets this racket apart.
A fine survivor from the early days of lawn tennis, this piece captures both the innovation and the elegant simplicity that defined Bussey's work.
