Vintage Bussey Fishtail Tennis Racket, The Gordon
George Bussey Wooden Fishtail Tennis Racket, The Gordon
A lawn tennis racket by Bussey, 'The Gordon'. A nice ash frame with convex walnut wedge. The wedge is stamped 'The Gordon', top of the racket with a very faint 'Bussey' mark. The racket has been restrung. Handle stamped 11 ½ on one side with a very attractive shaped fishtail handle.
The fishtail (fish tail) was an innovation in the Victorian period and was an attractive gimmick to help tennis players to grip their rackets. They were manufactured approximately from the 1890's to the 1920's and their shapely handle is always an attraction to the collector.
George Bussey was a large London manufacturer of high-quality equipment for sports and games.
