Victorian Ladies Belt Quiver with Archery Arrows.
A fine and complete Victorian ladies' belt-mounted quiver set, presented with four traditional archery arrows by Muir of Edinburgh, a respected Scottish maker renowned for finely crafted archery equipment.
The arrows are fitted with metal piles (bullet-shaped target heads) and spliced nocks. Each shaft incorporates a hardwood "footing" or "foreshaft" spliced into the main body, providing additional forward weight and improved flight stability, an advanced construction technique typical of high-quality Victorian archery equipment. The arrows measure approximately 72 cm in length and display honest wear consistent with use, enhancing their authenticity and period character.
The fletching remains in very good condition, with the exception of one arrow where a single flight has been sympathetically replaced. Each arrow also bears a small paper label inscribed in ink "Bissell," suggesting ownership or club identification.
The set is housed in its original green leather belt quiver, which remains intact and functional, though showing expected wear from age. Attached is a small leather purse containing five leather finger tips (archery finger guards), a rare and appealing survival that adds to the completeness of the set.
A further paper label on the belt reads "Miss F.C. Login, Edinburgh Ladies," indicating possible association with a women's archery society, in keeping with the strong tradition of ladies' archery clubs in Scotland during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Altogether, this is a highly attractive and well-preserved Victorian archery ensemble, combining craftsmanship, provenance, and historical interest, and would be of strong appeal to collectors of antique sporting equipment.
