Hickory Shafted Putter.
The club has the original hickory shaft with a later polished leather grip, the head with a flanged back and to help with alignment the hosel, hickory shaft and leather grip all have a flat leading edge. The club was made by Cochrane Ltd. of Edinburgh and it is stamped with their 'Knight' cleek mark. The head is also stamped 'Putter, Special, N, Challenger Rustless Metal' and within an oval 'F.Bird, Sheffield'.
Cochrane's Ltd., Edinburgh, was founded by J. P. Cochrane. In 1906 Cochrane was originally in the golf ball business but later entered the club market. He used the 'Bowline Knot' cleek mark as well as the 'Knight' and a monogram from 1915 until around 1939.
William Gibson, Fife, also made an identical putter with the model name 'The Orion' which was endorsed by five times Open Champion, James Braid.
