Long Nose Golf Club, Putter By Hugh Philp, R. Forgan Of St Andrews
Long Nose Golf Club, Putter By Hugh Philp, R. Forgan Of St Andrews
Long Nose Hugh Philp, Robert Forgan Putter.
An elegant long nose scared head putter with a dual head stamp, H Philp/R Forgan. This great looking club with a wide bodied light stained fruitwood head, diamond pattern face markings, lead weight to the rear and the traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole. The hickory shaft stamped 'R. Forgan and Son, St Andrews below the full length leather grip. Robert Forgan is one of the most famous club makers who started working for his uncle, Hugh Philp, in 1852. Philp was renowned as one of the best wooden club makers around. When Philp died in 1856 Forgan took over the business. This may explain the dual stamp on the head as this was probably made by Philp and Forgan finished it off with his shaft and then added his stamp to both.
This is a very nice example of a scared head golf club from the 1870's - 1880's in excellent condition.
Approximate head size:-
a = 11 cm
b = 3 cm
c = 5.5 cm
The early clubs are made with a hickory shaft glued to the head by means of a splice or scare joint. This joint is then further strengthened by whipping with a pitched thread. All beautifully hand made by craftsmen of the time.
