Vintage Golf Club, Rut Iron, Army And Navy Stores.
Hickory Shafted Army & Navy Rut Iron.
A rare good quality early smooth faced rut iron, also known as a rut niblick, rutter or track iron. Rut irons were commonly used to hit the ball from cart tracks and deep ruts etc. Young Tom Morris was known to hit his rut iron from the fairway to play a high shot onto the green, a shot only a player of his calibre could master. They say he even managed to get backspin on the ball.
The golf club is with hickory shaft and a later suede grip. The head has no makers marks, but it is a high-quality club and heavy in weight, has a long hosel (11 ½ cm) and a thick blade, not to be confused with the later 'Rut Niblick' that was lighter, thinner blade and a shorter hosel. The shaft with faint Army & Navy stamp and some initials, possibly an A, a smaller R and even smaller c.
A nice desirable golf collectable.
The approximate measurements of the club face are;
Width 6 cm
Depth 4.7 cm
