Mappin Brother's Leather Attache Or Writing Case
Leather Attaché / Writing Case - Mappin Brothers, c.1898
A fine late 19th-century tan leather attaché, briefcase or writing case by Mappin Brothers, retaining its original character and exceptional interior colour. The case features a single leather carry handle and a working silver lock (no key), with belt fastening securing the front flap.
The silver lock is fully hallmarked, displaying the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, and the date letter "y" corresponding to 1898, along with the maker's mark "F.W." (maker currently unidentified).
The interior is beautifully fitted and lined in leather and tan moiré silk, still vibrant and well-preserved, and gilt-stamped "Mappin Brothers, 65 Cheapside, E.C.". It includes multiple expandable compartments for documents, numerous divisions for papers and correspondence, pouches for stamps and business cards, two pen holders, and a blotting book, making it both practical and elegant.
A classic leather briefcase / document case in original condition, combining craftsmanship, functionality, and period charm.
