The Tournament Bussey Flat Top Lawn Tennis Racket
The Tournament Bussey Flat Top Lawn Tennis Racket
Fish Tail Tennis Racket, George Gibson Bussey.
A fine and rare example of an early fish tail lawn tennis racket by Bussey 'The Tournament 1'. A nice flat top ash framed racket with convex walnut wedge. On one side of the wedge is 'The Tournament 1' embossed in gilt, the other side 'L???????wood's sporting stores, Bournemouth'. The handle with the Bussey GGB Arrow logo and 'GEO.G.BUSSEY&Co. London'. The racket has a bent frame which is some what attractive and has an unusual large fish tail handle.
The fishtail (fish tail) was an innovation in the Victorian period and was an attractive gimmick to help tennis players to grip their rackets. They were manufactured approximately from the 1890's to the 1920's and their shapely handle is always an attraction to the collector.
