Table Tennis Bats, Gossima Rackets.
A pair of "Best Vellum" battledores with paper trade label of 'The Albert Bazaar, 3 Shandwick Place, Edinburgh'. There is also a label stating 'Warranted best Vellum'. The Gossima, table tennis, ping pong bats are in nice original condition with vellum drum-type faces and covered in decorative red paper. The sport originated in Victorian England, where it was played among the upper-class as an after-dinner parlour game. It is noted that the big game makers 'John Jacques of London' introduce their "Gossima" game in 1891, this used the drum-type paddles or bats. In 1901 John Jacques registered "Ping Pong" as a trade name in England. The American rights to the name were sold to Parker Brothers. On December 12 in the same year, The Table Tennis Association was formed in England. Four days later, The Ping Pong Association was also formed in England. The game was known by many names Ping Pong, Gossima, Table Tennis, Whiff Whaff, Parlour Tennis to name a few, Table Tennis and Ping Pong came to the fore. But the correct modern title for the sport in the UK and most of the rest of the world is "table tennis". This is because "ping pong" is a trade mark, registered by the London toy importers and manufacturers Hamley Brothers on 20 September 1900 for their version of table tennis manufactured by John Jaques & Son.
