Robert White Hickory Shafted Rut Iron.
A good quality smooth faced rut or track iron golf club with hickory shaft with sheep skin grip. The head stamped on the back 'R. White, Maker, St Andrews'. A nice desirable golf collectable. The club head has a slight cupped or concave smooth face. This rut iron is heavy in weight, has a long hosel and a thick blade, not to be confused with the later 'Rut Niblick' that was lighter, thinner blade and a shorter hosel.
Head size:- 3" long, 2" high.
Hosel length:- 4½" long.
Robert was born in St Andrews in 1857, he was a blacksmith who made club heads as a side line. He supplied many of the prominent club makers of the day like Robert Forgan and Tom Morris. He apprenticed Robert Condie and Tom Stewart, the latter becoming the most famous cleek maker in Scotland.
