h1 classbiography Robert Forganh1Robert Forgan is one of the most famous club makers who started working for his uncle Hugh Philp in 1852. Philp was renowned as one of the best wooden club makers around. When Philp died in 1856 Forgan took over the business. Many of the other great club makers such as Auchterlonie and Anderson learned their trade with Forgan before setting up on their own. Robert Forgan became clubmaker to HRH Prince of Wales in 1863 and used the princes plume of three feathers as his mark until 1901 when upon the Prince became King Edward his mark changed to the Kings Crown. Forgans youngest son Thomas joined the clubmaking business in 1881 when it was renamed R. Forgan and Son. The firm was the largest producer of golf clubs in the 1890s and in 1920 it became a Limited company. Forgans was for a time under the control of Spalding until the 1960s. Spalding was a large American business making golf clubs in the States in the mid 1890s and in Britain shortly thereafter.
