Royal Doulton Fishing Bowl
Royal Doulton Fishing Bowl
Vintage Royal Doulton Fishing Ceramic Bowl.
A good sized Royal Doulton Series Ware 'The Gallant Fishers' Fishing bowl. The bowl with a polychrome fishing scene depicts two sleeping anglers back to back with the inscription: 'O the gallant fisher's life it is the best of any'. There is a slight foul to the rim of the bowl, but may have been done when made as it is glazed over. The bottom has the pattern number D3680 and has the special "The Gallant Fishers" back stamp. The stamp looks like an old English shop sign in the shape of a fish, bearing the words Royal Doulton "The Gallant Fishers" made in England.
The Gallant Fishers series was introduced in around 1913 and was withdrawn by 1936.
It is thought that Royal Doulton Series Ware was the brainchild of Charles John Noke, and 'The Gallant Fishers' series was inspired by the works of Isaac Walton. The humorous characters are very reminiscent of Charles Crombie works.
